Dear Music Lovers: Today, more than ever, deserving artists have a chance to be heard. I want to encourage musicians and songwriters to excel in their field, to drill the unmined territories of creativity, and express your God-given talent to all the anxious ears awaiting your beauty. Follow your inner sense of music and don't be afraid to express what you find there. I wish you every inspiration and every blessing.

Evan McHugh on the Cayamo Cruise
by Kimmy Sophia Brown,

Genevieve and I were winding our way up (or down?) a staircase on the ship and two handsome young men were passing us and we engaged in a bit of small talk with them. Genevieve asked them if they were performing on the ship and it turned out that one of them was - Evan McHugh. His friend’s name was Garrett Moore and it turns out that he is a musician too, although he didn’t sing on the ship (that I know of).

Gaelic Storm on the Cayamo Cruise

Oh my holy potato, Gaelic Storm! They had the good fortune to play on the same Lido deck as Evan McHugh except that they had the advantage of being a large band with a large sound that could command the space.

The Bowmans on the Cayamo Cruise

After Lyle Lovett and possibly dinner, I can’t remember in which order, we sashayed to the Red and Black Lounge which sounds satanic but wasn’t. There, sequestered, or sea-questered, as we were at sea, were the long, lovely, lean and blond Bowman twins. “Womb-mates” as my twin friends, Edy and Betsy, always say.

The Duhks on the Cayamo Cruise
by Kimmy Sophia Brown,

The Duhks! I had a little back and forth tug a war with a guy before the concert as to whether it was pronounced Dukes or Ducks but when they came on stage they said, thank you for coming to hear the Ducks! So I won a promised beer for the next night which I didn’t collect, but it’s nice to win anyway!

Patty Griffin on the Cayamo Cruise
by Kimmy Sophia Brown,
March 16, 2008
Patty Griffin scampered out on the stage for the early show, wearing a little black skirt, heels, and a pearl-gray, sleeveless top. She sat at the piano and played some haunting chords in a minor key. Then she tipped back her head with that glorious mane of red hair and did an extremely soulful rendition of “Summertime” by George Gershwin. At the end of it, she said to the audience, “The older I get, I need to scare the crap out of myself. I’ve never performed that in front of an audience before!”

Brandi Carlile on the Cayamo Cruise

Genevieve and I didn’t know much about Brandi Carlile the night we went to her event. Before the show we sat next to two fans, Alison and Christie, who have been following her career for years. They said that we were in for an amazing evening.

Emmylou Harris on the Cayamo Cruise

What a beautiful woman. That’s the first thing I want to say about Emmylou. She is a silver fox. I kept saying to everyone around me, if God could come down as a woman he would appear as Emmylou. She has queenly dignity, motherly warmth and feminine beauty, besides having a voice that conveys a lifetime of wisdom, insight and emotion.

Shawn Colvin on the Cayamo Cruise

I was very excited to see Shawn Colvin in person. I have been meaning to write her a letter for years just to say, “Your music opens my heart.” I don’t know what it is about her exactly - I guess it’s the sweetness in her voice and the honesty in her lyrics. Every Christmas I pop her CD, “Holiday Songs and Lullabies” in the boom box and I am soothed.

Lyle Lovett on the Cayamo Cruise

His stage presence is professional and comfortable. He has the most recognizable face on the planet. I don’t think anyone else looks like him, although I have never seen photos of his family, perhaps they all look like him. His face is comprised of wonderful lines, which create a crinkly, crackly grin. If the sun had a grin it might look like Lyle.

John Hiatt on the Cayamo Cruise
by Kimmy Sophia Brown,
February 18, 2008

John Hiatt came out on the Cayamo stage wearing a Hawaiian shirt and jeans and a big smile. He picked up his perfectly tuned 12 string guitar and played a gritty, warm feelin' love song called, "You've got a real fine love" ("...one I'm unworthy of...").
