Patrick Ball, premier celtic harpist, took us back in time tonight with his presentation of "O' Carolan's Farewell to Music" at the TFFM (Tidewater Friends of Folk Music) sponsored concert at the Virginia Beach Public Library.

Patrick Ball co-wrote (with Peter Glazer) the mono-drama, told from the point of view of Irish poet, Charles McCabe, in tribute to his friend, the blind Irish harpist, Turlough O' Carolan.

Set in a pub in 1738, Ball, dressed in the garb of the day, told the story in a robust Irish accent, weaving anecdotal stories of the composter/harpist, O'Carolan, between gorgeous pieces on his brass-stringed celtic harp. This music is other-worldly and truly mesmerizing.

Ball has created a niche for himself in contrast to this modern world of musical copy cats. His strong acting skills and ease with the harp sweep the audience into a living, breathing world seen by few in this age of slick and shiny manufactured entertainment.

One hopes someone will sing about Patrick Ball in future centuries. His exceptional efforts have given us a wonderful gift to be enjoyed and remembered.
