Columns :: MusicViews Karen Trump ~ CD: "Safely Home" Genre: folk/bluegrass October 30, 2008
![]() Karen Trump’s album, Safely Home, is a cozy collection of twelve original songs that evoke the country atmosphere of her Virginia home. The songs are biographical stories, incidents and insights into life. She has a very mellow, alto voice and is accompanied by a tight group of accomplished musicians. “Justice” is a plea for peace regarding the war in Iraq. “Ain’t Taking You Back” is a real fun honky tonk number replete with tinkly piano. I bet if Patsy Cline were still alive she would want to record it. “Isabel” is a tribute to one of the many hurricanes that roared up the east coast in recent years. Real nice dobro on that one! One song that really caught my ear is “Mrs. Lincoln”. Not only because it’s a nice little tune but Mary Todd Lincoln is such an unusual subject for a song. Steven Spielberg has an upcoming movie in the works about the Lincolns starring Liam Neeson and Sally Field in the title roles. Hey Steven, contact Karen and use this song in your movie. It’s destiny! “Safely Home” is a pretty and sad song that Karen wrote for her mom when she passed away. It’s hard enough to weather the death of a loved one but then to compose a song that expresses deeply personal sentiments about it is a real blessing. I think many people might be comforted using “Safely Home” for memorial services or funerals for their loved ones. “Menopause” is a funny, feisty little ditty making light of a perfectly natural event in every woman’s life. “Turns you into a witch ready for a fight”. Hmmm, sounds familiar. ‘Nuff said! “Crescent Moon” is a very, romantic love song with really pretty guitar and violin accompaniment. Karen has been composing and performing all her life in Virginia. She performs as a solo artist and also with other excellent musicians in her area. She has been working in the field of special education for many years but she is now pursuing her music career full throttle. Many blessings to Karen on her path. I’ve really enjoyed this album.
