Inevitable Love

~ for God ~

September 3, 2001

You appear quietly.
Captured in the eyes of a stranger
helping a broken victim;
        flitting to another before an onrush of thanks.

Your heart is diffident,
Caressing us at unexpected moments,
Surprising us with a glance from a friend,
        or a kind word in the middle of the street;
Murmured in a language so subtle
        that it seldom finds an audience
Unless its resonance catches us suddenly;
        slipping between walls of static.

Discordant and aggressive in our clamor,
We couldn't sense the loneliness
        you felt as we announced
Your absence.

You continue because you know us.
Writing the music of the universe
Was your expression of delight as you spun
        into existence our ability to think,
        our sense of the infinite,
        and our passion.

Your longing for our hearts to brush against yours
Is whispered to us as we gaze in astonishment
        at a moment of beauty;
As we watch the faces of children;
        and remember goodness.

The dream of our response
        and inevitable love,
Has carried you through a history of loss
        that you may never share,
        and hope to forget.

After sensing your tears our complicated hearts
        break down in prayer.
        How can we make you happy?
        Asking, we find ourselves.
Nothing will stop us
        from expressing Your transcendent love.
