Rounding the turn and entering the highway
     she caught my eye.
     Was she a Christmas deer
     fallen from a truck for a shopping mall Santa?
     She cocked her head
     and stillness became animate.
     The split second sight of her beauty gave a thrill,
     and my noisy kids hushed as they pointed: Look!
     She was cornered by pavement,
     a remnant of lost woodlands.

     I hope she found her way home.
